Mr Smith, of Braithwaite Road, in the Sparkbrook area of Birmingham, denies murdering Jodie Hyde, 21, Rosemary Corcoran, 25, and Carol Jordan, 39, between 8 and 12 November last year. All three women frequented The Rainbow, a pub in the Digbeth area of Birmingham where Smith ran an unlicensed cab business. This included blood, which matched each of the three victims, on Smith's belongings. "In 20 years of working for the FSS, I have never had to deal with so much evidence in relation to one suspect. It was quite overwhelming." The investigation to catch Smith involved more than 100 detectives and 50 support staff from West Mercia and West Midlands Police.

He went to a backpacker in Rio de Janeiro, where a fellow guest recognized him from news reports and tipped off Brazilian police. Paint found on Carol Jordan’s trousers was found to match paint from the suspect’s car. A partial DNA profile of Rosemary Corcoran recovered from an apparent fingermark in blood, found on one of the back windows. Rosemary Corcoran’s blood on the outside offside tyre and mud flap and the rear offside wing. At Smith’s home, they found a bath full of murky, brown water that contained apparently bloodstained clothing.

He coached Little League, attended swim and diving meets, drove teams to out of town competition, bid on 4-H animals at fairs, spent holidays at 3-Day horse events and used his beloved Kabota tractor to haul hay, make riding arenas, etc. We welcomed an inner-city boy into our family after the Watts Riots, hosted 2 exchange students – Gabi Rundshagen from Germany and Martti Niemi from Finland and sponsored numerous foreign children. He then spent a year in Ireland lodging with a travelling family who took pity on him while he was hitchhiking in Athlone, County Westmeath. He told them he was an English gypsy visiting Ireland, and they allowed him to live rent-free in a spare caravan, while he contributed a portion of his unemployment benefit towards food. This family asked Smith to leave when they became uncomfortable about sexual remarks he had made to young female members of the family. He became well known locally and was a regular patron of the Shamrock Cafe on Stratford Road and of the Rainbow pub in Digbeth, where he was employed on a casual basis as an odd-jobber and served as an unofficial taxi driver for drinkers. Philip John Smith was born in 1965 at the City Maternity Hospital in Gloucester, where he grew up.

Police interviewed Smith in connection with the deaths of Hyde and Jordan on 28 November and charged him with their murders two days later. While awaiting trial, Smith was held as a Category A prisoner in the high-security Woodhill Prison in Buckinghamshire. Smith moved from Gloucester to Tewkesbury and then Ross-on-Wye, where he lived with a female partner. They had a son in 1990 and two more children in 1992, but Smith left the family and moved to Cardiff when the relationship became difficult.
